Recording bass on location

One of the numerous advantages of recording the new album DIY-style is probably being able to record at home whenever it feels right. No more stressful schedules or studio deadlines.

Last week nickyP and TomP recorded drum takes in Logic Pro in the addActionListener(soundlab) in Westerlo and emailed an mp3 to me. I recorded a ‘dry’ bassguitar on top of the drums in Leuven in Garageband and bounced that bass-track only using email.

So now the rest of the band can choose a suitable bass sound using a plug-in, add some equalizing and compression and eventually start adding guitars onto it.

I just plugged in my bass guitar into a Line 6 TonePort UX2 which comes with an arsenal of guitar-, vocal- & bass sounds, distortions and effects. The included Gearbox software can be configured to output a dry track (without amp simulation and effects) into your recording software (Garageband, Logic, Ableton Live etc.) or you can just commit your amp and effects selection to your virtual tape.

The game's afoot

Howdy folks,

We officially began laying down tracks for our new album 2 weeks ago, and so it was time to update our little website.

The website is blog-style this time, because the whole static bio-discography-media-shows-guestbook-thing is so 90's. So thanks for stopping by, and don't forget to subscribe to our RSS feed if you're into that kind of kinky stuff.

The new record is coming along nicely, we've been writing songs as a threesome for almost a year now. We've got heaps of material lying around on our computers since we started taping it all into Garageband a couple of years ago.

For the better part of 2007 we've been getting to grips with the gear we've bought for our little home-studio addActionListener(this) soundLabs and it's been a great learning experience for all of us. Doing it all yourself has so much advantages, like being able to just throw away 2 days work of drum-recording without it costing a fortune is.

Two weeks ago we tracked several takes of drums for a song, and while listening to it during the next couple of weeks we found out our tracks needed more hi-hat cymbals to establish the groove of the song more efficiently. No harm done, next week we can tweak the mic positions and redo the take without any stress involved. I can't stress enough how good that makes you feel.

All of us feel we've got the chance to actually work out our ideas while recording, instead of just recording 12 songs that sound the same because they we're recording using the same techniques over the period of couple of days.

Subscribe to (iTunes) or check out our podcast for some clips of our experiments and rehearsals. We're going to keep that updated with tracks while we're recording the album.

So stay tuned, and we'll let you know how we're doing.
